While some folks may be born with perfectly aligned teeth, healthy smiles are created through good routine dental hygiene practices. And while oral ailments such as gum disease do possess a genetic component, anyone can still encounter these issues if they don’t take care of their teeth. This is why Dr. Kenneth Childers with Montclair Dental Care is devoted to providing his patients the best in oral health service.
Our Routine Professional Cleanings and Dental Exams
Most people tend to avoid or ignore routine dental cleanings and exams because they often find the experience uncomfortable. Having your mouth poked, prodded, power brushed, and scrapped isn’t what most would consider a “good time.” But, at Montclair Dental Care, Dr. Childers and his talented team go out of their way to ensure you have the most relaxing and comfortable visit possible because we really want you to develop good oral hygienic habits, including routine checkups at least twice a year.
Dr. Childers recommends the following best practices to maintain optimal oral health between visits.
- If you’re one of the few who brush twice daily, we salute you! However, try setting a timer for about two minutes to ensure you’re brushing as diligently as you should. This way, you can ensure you clean your teeth as thoroughly as needed.
- Also, if you really want to maximize your oral health, it’s recommended that you brush after every meal.
- And while brushing, don’t forget to brush the roof of your mouth, tongue, and gums. You want to use a soft-bristled toothbrush to ensure you don’t irritate your gums. Ignoring those areas could provide a hiding spot for harmful bacteria, leading to harmful conditions such as gum disease and tooth decay. Brushing those areas also helps combat bad breath.
- Flossing is also a very important habit that even routine brushers forget. Brushing alone can only remove so much plaque, food particles, and bacteria. But, flossing around and between teeth will remove what brushing couldn’t reach. It’s also important to spend at least two minutes flossing as well.
- And there is also a correct way to floss. First, use lots of floss, no less than 18-inches. This way, you don’t have to worry about accidentally reusing parts of your floss. And when flossing, it’s best to use a light touch, as rubbing your floss too aggressively may irritate or damage gum tissues.
For those experiencing problems cleaning between tight areas or under dental appliances such as bridges, you may need specialized products such as floss threaders and interdental brushes. Dr. Childers can also discuss options if you need new orthodontic care, dental work repair, or replacement.
