What is a Dental Bridge?

A dental bridge is a time-tested procedure that provides an effective replacement of a tooth or several missing teeth. Bridges hold the prosthetic tooth while using other healthy teeth as support anchors, thus completing the “bridge.” However, the support teeth must be strong and healthy to be strong anchors for the pontic (or replacement tooth).

Plus, the anchoring (or abundant) teeth have to be crowned. These dental crowns help reinforce the supporting teeth to provide adequate long-term support to the pontic. But, before the crowns can be fitted over the abundant teeth, the teeth must be shaped and reduced in size, allowing the crown to fit properly.

Once our talented lab partners construct your crowns and the pontic, they are placed in your mouth and make up a completed bridge. Once Dr. Childers securely stabilizes your crowns to the abundant teeth, the pontic will fill in the space and effectively replace your missing tooth or teeth.

There are many variations of how dental bridges can be crafted to replace a missing tooth or teeth. And with the proper care, dental bridges can last patients a very long time. We will also show you the appropriate way to clean underneath your bridge using instruments such as interdental brushes, picks, or floss threaders to remove hard-to-reach bacteria and food particles trapped under your bridge.
